Happy Monday! Let’s get creative, shall we? I know I could use some wonderful inspiration right now (I feel a little out of juice at the moment–eek!). Here’s what the girls have been up to this week!

First of all, here is a gorgeous paper bead bracelet from Kristie, made with Midnight Garden Party papers. Isn’t this amazing?!

And the Hybrid Team has been very busy making some lovely cards, too! Here’s a sampling of cards from Kim, Jill and Sharon (just click to enlarge):

The Digital Team has been busy as well, making some gorgeous layouts! Here are two layouts from Crystal using Chilled Wine, along with one from Monica in the middle, using some Twitter Blossoms goodies:

Anyone up for a hybrid challenge?

October 17, 2008 | Filed Under Challenges | 3 Comments

Hi everyone, it’s Sharon (aka skyezak) here hosting this weeks blog Sugarplum Paperie blog challenge!

I’ve decided to show you how simple and easy it is to whip up a hybrid layout using some digital paper and elements along with a few other goodies from my scrapbooking stash.  You don’t need to own lots of expensive tools or products to incorporate your digital scrapbooking with traditional scrapbooking products so follow along and see what I come up with and please have a go at making a hybrid layout/project yourself. You could win a gift card to the Sugarplum store!

When creating a layout, I typically start with my photographs and then work my papers in to match the colours.  Then I’ll add my embellishments and journaling at the end.  I know everyone has their own process of creativity, but this is what works for me!  The most common thing I hear from traditional paper scrappers is that digital is not lumpy and bumpy thus they don’t like the ‘flat’ look of pages so they’re not interested in trying it.  But hybrid still allows you to add as much layering to your pages as you wish.  Even without using physical products, you can still layer your digital elements and papers with some 3D foam tape, so the possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

I have created an 8.5 x 11 inch layout which means you can print out the patterned paper on a regular printer.  I do have the advantage of owning an A3 printer, but if you don’t have one of those, just print your papers and embellishments on letter size and mount to your 12 x 12 inch papers or cardstock.  With a letter size sheet, you could also make cards or many other off-the-page projects too.  Again, you don’t need to own many expensive tools to incorporate digital items into your work.  I also print all my papers and embellishments out on regular flat scrapbooking cardstock.  The textured cardstock may not give you a smooth, crisp look but that may be the look you’re going for.

I decided to make a layout totally digital and also the same one in hybrid style so you can see that you can achieve the same layout using both methods.  So firstly, here’s a little picture of my digital layout:

Now here’s my hybrid take on the same layout.  I’ve used 3D foam tape to mount the four photos across the top, the word FOO and the chipboard flourish.  I’ve used some little alpha stickers from Carolee’s Creations for the word FIGHTERS, a silver scalloped paper strip from Doodlebug, some black ribbon and I’ve inked the chipboard flourish with Tim Holtz Distress Ink.  I’ve also used an edge distresser to rough up the edges of some of the items.  Because I haven’t included my journalling on this hybrid layout, I’m going to tuck a hidden tag in behind the pink paper with a little tab to pull it out when I want to read it.

All in all, I’ve used the same page layout and come up with a similar look using two different scrapping methods.  So there you have it, if you want lumpy bumpy using digital products, you can certainly do it!

I’ll make the theme for this week to scrap about something that ‘entertains‘ you.  In my case, I went to see a concert but it could be watching a sport, going to the theatre or watching your child do dancing/singing or just being their silly selves!  And remember hybrid is a great way to incorporate all those bits of memorabilia that you collect like ticket stubs, vouchers, programs, greeting cards, etc so you may want to include these rather than a photo.  I’ll leave it up to you.

If you want to be in with a chance to win a gift card, post your hybrid layout or project in the gallery of your choosing and come back here to this post and leave us the link to your layout in the Comments section. The winner will be picked at random next Friday, October 24th. Please use mostly Sugarplum goodies on your layout. Remember, you can find Nicole’s products at the Sugarplum Paperie store, at The Digichick and a load of freebies are available right here on the Sugarplum blog.

This challenge is open from 17th Oct – 24th Oct.  So c’mon and dig out your buttons and ribbons and jump into the hybrid world if you haven’t already!

And more importantly, I’d like to congratulate last weeks winner which is alamama who created a beautiful layout for Jill’s advertising challenge.  Congrats and I’ll be sending you an email shortly with details of how to redeem your gift card!
